Afisha is an online listings calendar of exhibitions, gallery openings, lectures, performances, and publishing events taking place in Tbilisi, Georgia and the Caucasus. Afisha promotes a wide variety of cultural activities intended for both professionals and the general public, and the events featured on the platform are primarily submitted by its readership. The idea behind the platform is to support cultural engagement  in the region by making events easily discoverable and accessible. Afisha is independently funded and was founded in Tbilisi, 2022.

The Why Not Gallery is glad to present Mariam Akhobadze’s solo show ‘Shadows Determine Time’

Mariam Akhobadze's paintings create a haunting and ambiguous world where the boundaries between stillness and movement, past and present, and even reality and illusion become fluid and uncertain. The human figures in her works are often set within lush, tranquil greenery, evoking an almost surreal atmosphere. At first glance, the settings may appear serene, even idyllic, but there is an underlying tension in the air. The figures are typically depicted in solitude, enveloped in their own isolation, as if caught in a moment that could just as easily be from a 1960s film noir or a contemporary psychological thriller. The sparse details in the scenes — a corner of vintage furniture, a single garment — offer subtle hints about the context, yet they never fully explain it. This ambiguity in time and place is one of Akhobadze's defining techniques, leaving the viewer in a state of uncertainty, as if they are witnessing a snapshot from an ongoing drama where the characters are suspended in time.

Photographer and multimedia artist Beat Streuli is visiting Georgia. The artist’s family history is closely linked to the country. His mother, Rosalie Urfer, was born in the Caucasus region in 1920. By that time, two generations of the Urfer family were already living in Georgia.
With his first exhibition in Tbilisi, the artist presented a photographic retrospective of his family's past, while the second part focused on working with students. Beat Streuli led a series of workshops as part of The Center of Contemporary Art’s "Creative Mediation" program, and the results of the process were presented in the form of an exhibition.
The exhibition of the students' works will open on November 6 at 19:00 PM.

E.A. Shared Space is thrilled to invite you to a duo exhibition by Qeu Meparishvili and Hussein Shikha.The practices otherwise distinct from one another, come together through thinking, methodology and interest in their, at times shared, but mostly different cultural mythologies.
Both the artist seems to be intrigued both by their immediate and collective past, generational trauma, collective memory and cultural histories and find shelter and grounding in history in order to imagine future, through reflecting the present. Like a thread of history, the threads created by the artists create a complex inter-connected narrative.
Hussein Shikha’s work especially stands out with a futuristic vision, while using material such as hologram, digital language and tapestry, historically connected to digital media. Based on extensive research into the history of his immediate family and questions of displacement, he borrows the story-telling method of the almost vanishing practice of carpet and tapestry-making of Southern Iraq and through the process of digitizing and the use of machine-made production he re-creates the new stories of his own imagining.
The signs and symbols on his work stem from the contemporary popular culture, early first-wave digital games to Mesopotamian symbols and characters, which reinterpreted are being put into the new context of the contemporary moment in Iraq, giving paths to imagining the future. Carpets, traditionally meant for storytelling, have been reflecting history for centuries. Often showing the glory of the culture, what could the carpets tell today, if asked? What would the signs and symbols be, if left to their own devices in the contemporary moment?
Meparishvili’s interest in Georgian and Caucasian opus and antique mythology is inherent to her new series of sculpture. Focusing on psychology of a (stray) dog, Meparishvili creates a navigation into the space of the exhibition based on her interpretation of a choreography created by a dog. As characteristic to dogs, Meparishvili dives into her subconscious and by following her associations only recreates fragmented moments of memories into her immediate past, as well as, collective memory. Meparishvili is interested in the stray dogs’ anarchistic style of navigating the space, the city creating independent to the normative, roads of their own. Here Meparishvili, connects this resistance to the normative behavior to the anti-colonial thinking. Finding solace and freedom in wilderness of a dog, Meparishvili’s sculptural bodies question the everyday of a human, suggesting following the uncultivated subsciences for creating new paths towards the future.

The Why Not Gallery is thrilled to present Tamara Lortkipanidze’s solo exhibition “Tears Don't Care Who Cries”.

In “Tears Don't Care Who Cries”, Tamara Lortkipanidze weaves an ethereal narrative that navigates the fragility of human emotions and the universality of sorrow. Her blue-toned paintings evoke an otherworldly forest, where humanoid figures float in glass-like bubbles or interact with spectral tree forms. This environment is cold yet intimate, where drops of liquid—tears or melting fragments of the self—hang suspended in time. The figures appear to be caught in moments of introspection, lost in surreal, dreamlike spaces where emotions transcend the corporeal experiences. The exhibition suggests that tears, once released, are impartial, detached from the one who sheds them, much like the suspended drops scattered across the scenes, indifferent to the sorrow they represent. Each piece illustrates the tension between isolation and connection, creating an uncanny, melancholic atmosphere that lingers, inviting the viewer to reflect on the ambiguous role of vulnerability in both personal and collective suffering.

There is a Chinese painting style and theory which organises the image in three plains; the foreground, the
central plain and the background. The background in these paintings is mostly occupied by mountains,
individualised and speaking, depicted as the main carrier of emotion and feelings between the people. In
the foreground you sometimes see people, sometimes acting but very often, tiny figures as which they are
depicted, gazing at the mountains, their backs turned towards us. In between these different plains are
voids, huge empty spaces that are supposed to make up for at least eighty percent of the surface. These
white areas sometimes evolve from painted clouds into which they are also dispersed.
The voids fill with projections, artifacts of movement, produced by the mind in images it discards as
improbable or recognises as possible doublings of forms. They move in themselves, hardly memorable
otherwise than in a feeling, a glimpse caught for a moment.
Academic as rules of painting tend to be they offer a place for undecidedness and retreat, shifting
responsibility to an accurate following. The projections are unruly, though, but hard to grasp.

Ariane Müller and Martin Ebner are two Austrian artists living in Berlin. Besides of their individual art
practice they are publishers (together with Henrik Olesen and Nikola Dietrich) of the Berlin based art
magazine Starship.

“Rocks and Waters”. Lecture by Andreia Garcia, student workshop exhibition by UCL and Ubani.
Ubani's public program will feature a lecture by architect, curator, and researcher Andreia Garcia titled "Hydropolitics: A Journey through the Fertile Futures Research Laboratory." The event will also include the launch of an exhibition displaying the outcomes of the UCL students' and Ubani cartography workshop. "Rocks and Waters" is the collateral event for the Tbilisi Architecture Biennial's 4th edition. The lecture accompanies the exhibition showcasing the UCL students’ and Ubani cartography workshop outcomes. During the workshop organised by Ubani, students from University College London were researching the relationship between Tbilisi’s physical features and the consequences of this for the city’s urban development, to better understand how nature affects the social.
The title "Rocks and Waters" emphasises the interconnection between urban waters and the city's body, which includes both landscape and architecture, linking the event to the early years of Ubani’s research programs.

Historical avant-garde contains forgotten moments and scenes that still need to be rediscovered or reconnected with other, central or peripheral scenes of the European avant-garde. Avant-garde moments would not occur in different national cultures without the strong desire to connected with the wider web of aesthetic searches and experimentation, happening in various European cultural loci. However, due to historical changes, some moments/scenes were disconnected from the web, staying unrecalled for decades. 

One such forgotten moment was that of the Tbilisi modernism/avant-garde (1917-1918) and the Futurist group H2SO4 (1920s), which has been erased from the Georgian cultural memory by the Soviet power while the country was disconnected from European cultural context. In the post-Soviet decades, Georgia had to reclaim this legacy. The present centenary of the Futurist group and journal H2SO4 (1924) is a good reason for discussing different, though often comparable avant-garde cultural experiences.

Patara Gallery invites you to the opening of Zu Kalinowska’s first solo exhibition in Georgia, “Grit Your Teeth”.

This is an exploration of labor, beauty, and human fragility through the lens of an artist: Fields at harvest time - reimagined as a site of both care and critique. At the heart of this exhibition is an interplay between real potatoes and delicate glass sprouts, the latter crafted to mimic potato shoots. The sprouts, made entirely of glass, emerge from the real potatoes, part of the installation is covered by latex skin stretched over the surface like a protective tarp, symbolising the fragility of human skin that, like the latex, is vulnerable to the harshness of the environment and at the same time acts as a protector. This duality between protection and vulnerability is central to Kalinowska's work: natural versus artificial, strength versus fragility, and visibility versus invisibility.

Kunsthalle Tbilisi is pleased to present Around the Studio’s exhibition titled “Conspiracy Bar”. The show represents Tbilisi young dweller’s imaginary apartment. Following the Georgian government’s enactment of a controversial “foreign influence” law, massive protests ensued, followed by a violent crackdown. More recently Georgia’s parliament passed an anti-LGBTQ propaganda law, imposing severe restrictions on LGBTQ+ freedoms and rights, echoing similar laws passed in Russia. Around the Studio creates a living space with objects that reference recent demonstration history in Tbilisi. The objects and demonstration furniture, designed by the artists, serve as visual cues that narrate the story of the 2023-2024 demonstrations and the memories of the apartment owner.
The apartment exhibition is designed to portray a typical individual who participated in the protests, providing glimpses into his/her reality, accumulated experiences, and daily routines. It is intended to cultivate an atmosphere where visitors can participate in conversations about ongoing events, enhancing awareness and stimulating dialogue on civil society activism.
The exhibition “Conspiracy Bar” offers a new gathering space located in a rented apartment. Over a span of six weeks, this space will serve as a hosting venue offering a variety of programs that include video screenings (curated by Irena Popiashvili), film screenings (curated by Salome Potskhverashvili), alternative music (curated by Nino Davadze) and experimental theater performance (presented by David Khorbaladze). The program schedule will be released separately.

E.A. Shared Space is delighted to invite you to the opening of solo exhibition New Paintings by the Systems Reseach Group.
Presented new body of work comprises a monotonous repetition of abstraction based on a symbol derived from a popular culture. The inverted symbol in itself carries a multiplicity of meanings, which originating from the Western popular culture remains at the peak of popularity in today’s Japan. The work undeniably brings some of the Japanese culture at stake - like short poems, Japanese Tanka, these works are minimalistic, in terms of form and selection of material, concrete and to the point in terms of representation and abstract at the same time, political in meaning and nearly devoid of pedagogical dogma, critical and softly comforting, aggressive yet delicate and un-non-invasive. It is nearly impossible to read the body of work based on any of these binaries, without interpreting the conflicting definitions at once. The artist give space to the audience and believes in the various readings depending on their point of view, position and perspective.
New Painting opens on September 22 and runs up until October 20, 2024 at E.A. Shared Space, Tbilisi, Georgia.
